ECHO
SIX × THIRTY MINUTES · 3D ANIMATION
A weary clone pilot. A sentient mech.
A resistance with a knife in its back.

STATUS: NOMINAL
PILOT: V.KAZIN
FACTION: SHADE

A haunted mech pilot hunting the faction that sold him out learns three things: he was manufactured, his mech is waking up, and the apocalypse was a corporate decision.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT
Echo is six half-hour episodes of adult animated science fiction, made in Unreal Engine. Eighteen years after a meteor shower ended the world, six powers fight in the dark over the alien material that powers their war machines. Viktor Kazin flies for one of them. He is a clone who does not know it, bonded to a mech that has started to remember lives it never lived, and the enemies he has fought for eleven years were chosen for him.
It sits where eighties and nineties block-mech anime crosses neo-noir. Blade Runner 2049 for pacing and interiority. Patlabor for machines treated as equipment. Transformers for silhouette and mass. Love, Death + Robots for what an adult animated episode can be. Stylised 3D anime realism, VHS texture, perpetual dusk running burnt orange into bruised purple, and X1 red threaded through every faction, every HUD and every wound.
WHAT IT SITS BESIDE
Four reference points, and what each one contributes. It runs slower and more interior than conventional action animation, punctuated by brutal, weighted mech combat.

THE CAST

THREE LAYERS DEEP
EVERY THREAD AT ONCE
The three layers, mapped across the people who carry them. Select any figure to isolate their connections. Solid is known in-world; dashed red is the conspiracy nobody on screen can see yet.

SUBJECT: EV-01
STATUS: DEFECTOR
VIKTOR
KAZIN
A NYX prototype pilot who defected to SHADE after a blackout mission he doesn’t remember. Synced with Echo Vane-01 at a depth no other pilot has survived. The neural link is a wound that won’t close.
He believes he volunteered for the Echo Frame program. He believes he is the man who survived the surgeries. He is wrong. He is the surgeries.
Weary noir detective. 75% K from Blade Runner 2049, 20% Spike Spiegel, 5% Rust Cohle. Quiet and haunted as baseline. Sparse internal voiceover — speaks when it costs him something. Layered wisdom in silence.

FACTIONS
Perpetual dusk — burnt-orange skies bruising into purple. Each faction owns a signature accent, but X1 red threads through every HUD: the same volatile resource powering every side of the war.
UI rule: every interface shows the user slightly less than it knows. Information is rationed. Displays flicker, lag, partially redact. The tech is good. The people who made it do not trust the people using it. Echo Vane’s HUD is the exception — it runs faster than it should, responds to Viktor faster than it should, and occasionally shows him things he did not ask to see.

Impact architects.
Logistics empire.
Silent partners.
Long-range combat.
Compromised resistance.
The truth-tellers.
KAIJU
THE FRAMES
Mechs in Ares Machina are not vehicles. They are X1-bonded constructs that pair with their pilot at the neural level. The deeper the sync, the more lethal the unit — and the more compromised the mind inside it. Frames are rare, expensive, heavily customised and bonded to their pilots. Losing a mech is losing a partner.

PROGRAM: ECHO FRAME
STATUS: UNIQUE
ECHO VANE-01
A blocky stealth duellist in matte black. The only fully synthesised survivor of NYX’s decommissioned Echo Frame program. Echo is not just a mech — the X1 lattice holds the residue of every pilot the program killed before Viktor, and his sync depth is the first that lets it speak. The dead are still in the frame.
SILENT WEAPONS
FOR A QUIET PILOT

WHAT VIKTOR FIGHTS

THE
X1
CRYSTAL
The volatile material at the centre of the war. X1 powers every mech, every Kaiju core, every dream of advancement. The factions kill each other for it. X1-Alpha — the original strain, before refinement — glows violet and responds to synthesised pilots in ways the refined material does not. It is rare, mostly held privately, and it is the key to what Viktor has become.
WHY ME, WHY NOW
Twenty-five years across animation, feature film, episodic television, broadcast and real-time production. Began as a digital matte painter at Walt Disney Animation Australia. Co-founded Spectre Studios, and as its Technical Director was part of the partnership that launched Australia’s first full-service LED virtual-production solution. Teams he founded or led, at Spectre Studios and Fenix Studios, delivered Unreal work on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Triple Frontier, Elvis, Beau Is Afraid and La Brea.
Founder of Fenix Studios, an Unreal Engine Service Partner. Unreal Fellow, Epic Games Unreal Fellowship in Virtual Production, 2021.
The practice combines authorship, design and technical command in one person. He directs, designs, lights, and builds the pipeline the work is made in. For X-Men: Dark Phoenix he developed an early real-time virtual-production and stunt-visualisation workflow, putting the director in VR to block camera before the shoot. On Roborovski, a real-time animated short rendered in Unreal Engine and winner of the Yoram Gross Award for Best Australian Animation at Flickerfest 2021, he was art director and technical director: setting the look and solving the real-time problem that let it run.
Ares Machina is the first project where the story is mine. Twenty-five years were spent building the capability: real-time performance capture into Unreal, photogrammetry and scanned locations built into playable environments, and LED-volume virtual production.
That work was always in service of someone else’s picture. The pipeline is now mature enough, and the commissioning appetite for adult animation strong enough, that a story of this scale can be authored and delivered from Queensland by the same hands that build it. Echo is not a proof of concept for a technique. The technical risk is no longer theoretical. This is the story it was built for.

DEVELOPMENT SNAPSHOT
THE FUTURE OF ARES
Ares Machina began as a game. The series is the first piece of it to reach an audience. Everything built here, the world, the frames, the factions, the pipeline, carries directly into what comes next.

ECHO is the narrative foundation of Ares Machina. It introduces the lore, and it proves the pipeline that everything after it runs on.
